Stone Age: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic Periods
The Stone Age refers to the time when humans primarily used stone tools. It is divided into three phases based on the development of tools, lifestyle, and culture: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic.
1. Paleolithic Period (Old Stone Age)
-
Timeframe: 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 BCE
-
Key Features:
- Humans lived as hunter-gatherers, relying on hunting animals and gathering fruits, nuts, and roots.
- Tools were made of rough, unpolished stone, like hand axes and scrapers.
- Humans lived in caves or open shelters and used fire for cooking and protection.
- No farming yet; survival depended entirely on nature.
- Art: Cave paintings like those found in Bhimbetka (Madhya Pradesh) depict hunting scenes.
-
Remember:
"P" in Paleolithic stands for Primitive tools and Painting in caves.
Bhimbetka = Paleolithic Art.
2. Mesolithic Period (Middle Stone Age)
-
Timeframe: 10,000 BCE to 8,000 BCE
-
Key Features:
- Transition period between hunting-gathering and early farming.
- Humans developed microliths: small, sharp stone tools that could be used with wood or bone.
- Domestication of animals began (e.g., dogs for hunting).
- Early forms of farming and semi-nomadic lifestyle started.
- Settlements: Temporary shelters and semi-permanent settlements emerged.
- Bow and arrow were used for hunting.
-
Sites in India:
- Bagor (Rajasthan)
- Adamgarh (Madhya Pradesh)
-
Remember:
"M" in Mesolithic = Microliths and Middle Phase of hunting to farming.
3. Neolithic Period (New Stone Age)
-
Timeframe: 8,000 BCE to 4,000 BCE (in India, it lasted till around 2,500 BCE)
-
Key Features:
- Humans became settled farmers, growing crops like wheat, barley, and rice.
- Domestication of animals expanded (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats).
- Tools were polished and made more efficient, like sickles and grinding stones.
- Pottery emerged for storing food and water.
- Permanent villages were built, such as Mehrgarh (Pakistan) and Chirand (Bihar).
- Spinning and weaving started, along with a more social lifestyle.
-
Remember:
"N" in Neolithic = New Life (settled farming, pottery, polished tools).
